To travel from the USA to Morocco you have two main options: a direct overnight flight to Casablanca, or a connection through a European hub to Marrakech, Fes or Tangier. Both are simple, and with the right first itinerary you can turn a long journey into a relaxed start to your holiday.
1. Direct flights to Casablanca
Royal Air Maroc, the national airline, operates direct flights from the US East Coast – including New York, Washington D.C. and Miami – to Casablanca Mohammed V airport. Flights take roughly seven to eight hours and usually land in the morning. From Casablanca you can connect to other Moroccan cities or start a private tour straight from the airport.
2. Connecting through Europe
If you live far from the East Coast, flying through Madrid, Paris, Lisbon, London or Frankfurt often gives more choice of arrival city. Landing directly in Marrakech or Fes saves a domestic transfer and lets you start your trip where the action is.
3. Entry rules for US citizens
US citizens can normally enter Morocco as tourists without a visa for up to 90 days with a passport valid for the length of the stay. Check the latest information on the US State Department page for Morocco before you book flights.
4. Beat the jet lag
Morocco is five or six hours ahead of New York, depending on the season. Plan an easy first day: a transfer to your hotel, a walk, an early dinner. Our Casablanca holiday packages start gently with Casablanca and Rabat before the longer driving days to Fes and the Sahara.
5. How long should you stay?
After a long-haul flight, seven days is the minimum to see the imperial cities, the desert and Marrakech without rushing. Ten to fourteen days let you add Chefchaouen, the Atlas Mountains and the coast. Popular choices for travellers from the USA are the 7 Day Desert Tour from Casablanca and the 14 Day Morocco Tour from Casablanca.
6. Practical tips
- Bring a plug adapter: Morocco uses type C and E sockets (220 V).
- Withdraw dirhams from cash machines on arrival; cards work in hotels but cash is king in souks.
- Dress in light, covering layers – comfortable in the heat and respectful in villages and medinas.
- Save your driver’s WhatsApp number before you land.
Best time to travel from the USA to Morocco
Most of our guests who travel from the USA to Morocco come in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November), when temperatures are pleasant everywhere from Fes to the Sahara. Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays are also popular for desert trips – book early, because flights and camps fill up. Summer is hot inland but fine for the coast and the Atlas Mountains, and it is often the best time to find flight deals.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to change money before I travel? No. The dirham is a closed currency, so most travellers withdraw cash at the airport on arrival and use cards in hotels.
Can I use my US phone? Yes, with international roaming, but a local SIM or eSIM is much cheaper and works well across the country, including on the road to the Sahara.
