The best time to visit the Sahara in Morocco is spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). Days are warm and sunny, nights are cool enough for a campfire, and the light on the Erg Chebbi dunes is at its most beautiful. But every season has something to offer – here is what to expect month by month.
Spring: March to May
Spring is often called the best time to visit the Sahara. Daytime temperatures in Merzouga are pleasant for walking and camel rides, the oases are green and the almond and rose valleys on the way are in bloom. Late spring can bring windy days with blowing sand, so keep a scarf in your bag.
Summer: June to August
Summer is very hot in the desert, often above 40 °C in the afternoon. Tours still run, but the rhythm changes: camel rides at sunrise and sunset, a long siesta in the shade and dinner late under the stars. Choose a camp with good ventilation and drink plenty of water.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the other favourite season: the heat fades, the date harvest begins in the Ziz and Draa valleys, and the nights are clear for stargazing. October and early November are ideal for families and photographers.
Winter: December to February
Winter days in the Sahara are sunny and mild, but nights can drop close to freezing. Camps add heavy blankets and fires, and the starry sky is spectacular. Christmas and New Year are very popular, so book early – see our holiday offers for festive trips.
Ramadan and holidays
During Ramadan, tours run normally and restaurants for travellers stay open, but some shops close in the afternoon and the evenings are lively. Moroccan school and public holidays are busy in the desert, so book camps early in those weeks.
What to pack in any season
- A scarf or shesh to protect against sun and wind
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat
- Comfortable shoes you can empty of sand
- A warm layer for the night, even in summer
- A small torch or headlamp for the camp
So, when is the best time to visit the Sahara?
If you want the most comfortable weather, the best time to visit the Sahara is from mid-March to mid-May and from late September to mid-November. If you prefer quiet dunes and dramatic starry skies, choose December to February outside the holidays and pack warm clothes. If summer is your only option, go anyway – just plan activities at sunrise and sunset and rest in the middle of the day. Whatever you choose, a private tour lets us adapt the timing every day to the weather.
Whatever month you choose, a private tour lets us plan the camel ride and activities at the best hours. For current weather conditions, you can check the Moroccan national weather service.
